How Often Should You Post on Social Media? What the Data Says

Salty Lavender

Posting more does help, but by less each time and only while the posts stay good. What the largest studies show.

An earlier version of this article told you to stop posting every day. When we went back to the largest studies on posting frequency, they did not support that, so we have rewritten it. The honest answer is less tidy than either slogan. Posting more often does help, but by less each time, and only for as long as the posts stay good.

How often should you post on social media?

For most businesses, three to five posts a week on Instagram and two to five on LinkedIn is a sound target, based on Buffer's analysis of millions of posts. Posting more tends to lift reach per post, with smaller gains at each step. The right frequency is the highest one you can keep up for months without the quality slipping.

What the data actually shows

Buffer, which makes a social media scheduling tool, analysed 2.1 million Instagram posts from more than 102,000 accounts. Compared with posting once or twice a week, accounts posting three to five times a week saw about 12% more reach per post. At six to nine posts it was about 18%, and at ten or more about 24%. Follower growth rose with frequency in the same way.

Two details matter more than the headline. Each step up brings a smaller gain than the one before. And Buffer's own conclusion is that "the most important factor probably remains content quality".

LinkedIn showed the same direction. In Buffer's study of more than 2 million LinkedIn posts, posting more each week went with more impressions per post, and it called two to five posts a week "the sweet spot" for most accounts.

So the fear that frequent posting is punished by the algorithm is not borne out by these numbers. The real risk is different: posting more than you can make well.

Format can matter more than frequency

How often you post is only half the question. Socialinsider's benchmark of 35 million Instagram posts from 447,613 accounts found an average engagement rate of 0.55% for carousels and 0.52% for Reels, against 0.37% for single images.

That gap is larger than most changes in frequency produce. A business posting a single photo every day might gain more by switching some of those posts to carousels or short videos than by adding more photos. We look at what makes an image worth posting in our guide to visual content creation.

How often to post, platform by platform

These are the ranges Buffer recommends in its frequency guide, with what to keep in mind for each.

PlatformSuggested frequencyWhat to keep in mind
Instagram3 to 5 posts a weekMix carousels and Reels with single images
LinkedIn2 to 5 posts a weekDocument posts had the highest engagement rate in Socialinsider's frequency data
TikTok2 to 5 posts a weekVideos are shown to people who do not follow you, so each one has to stand on its own
Facebook1 to 2 posts a dayOrganic reach is low for most business pages, so test whether the extra posts earn anything

If Facebook reach is already a problem, posting more will not fix the cause, and we explain why in why organic reach on Facebook and Instagram is so low.

How to find the right frequency for your business

  1. Start with what you can sustain. Pick a number you can keep for three months with posts you would be happy to see on your own feed.
  2. Measure per post and in total. Watch the reach and engagement of each post, and the total across the month. If the total rises while each post holds steady, the extra posts are earning their place.
  3. Change one thing at a time. Adjust either the frequency or the format in a given month, so you can tell which made the difference.
  4. Count what matters to the business. Website clicks and messages say more about social media's value to you than likes do.

When posting more is the wrong fix

If your posts get almost no reaction now, doubling them will mostly double the effort. Look first at what you are posting and at your profile. A profile that does not say clearly what you do and where loses people who came from a good post, and we cover that in how to optimise your social media profiles.

Social media also works best when it sends people somewhere. A post about a service should lead to a page about that service, which is the idea behind our guide to website marketing strategy.

Frequently asked questions

Is posting every day bad for engagement?

Not according to Buffer's data, which found that reach per post rose as accounts posted more often. Daily posting becomes a problem when it pushes quality down, because weak posts are still weak however often they appear.

How often should a business post on Instagram?

Three to five times a week is a good target for most businesses. That range gave a clear lift over posting once or twice a week in Buffer's study, without the workload of daily posting.

How often should I post on LinkedIn?

Two to five times a week. Buffer found that impressions per post kept rising with frequency on LinkedIn, but that range is where most accounts can stay consistent.

What if I only have time to post once a week?

Then post once a week, and make it count. A steady weekly post that is worth reading does more for you than a burst of daily posts followed by silence. Put the effort into format: a carousel or a short video usually earns more engagement than a single photo.

Should I post the same thing on every platform?

You can share the same idea, but adapt it. Each platform favours different formats, and a post written for LinkedIn rarely works as an Instagram caption without changes.
